One potential complication caused by colds is acute sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) which can cause acute pain. The ENT doctor uses an endoscopy to diagnose sinus problems. A radiologic examination is rarely necessary. An endoscope is a tube shaped instrument. It transports light to the area under examination and uses an optical system to ensure a clear view of the affected area. The examination does not hurt.
Different to acute sinusitis, chronic sinusitis can go unnoticed for years as there is usually no pain at all. The diagnosis is made by endoscopy and if necessary by computer tomography. In some cases a sinus operation might be helpful.
Not every abnormality of the septum requires surgical correction. Difficulty in breathing through the nose is often caused by serious swelling of the mucous membranes (of an allergic or non-allergic nature) rather than a septum deviation. To determine the cause, I conduct an examination with anamnesis and endoscopy.
Whether dust, pollen or food is the cause of the allergy, allergy-related complaints should be taken seriously. A banal, mild case of hay fever can turn into a case of serious allergic asthma very quickly.
Nowadays there are many excellent treatment options available which also can prevent complications such as allergic asthma.
